Personality:

Yukihime is generally quiet, coolly polite to (almost) everyone, and tries not to stick out too much. She's a dilligent student with good (though not exceptional) grades. A descendant of the prestigious Sanada family, a lot is expected of her, and she tries to live up to those expectations and be worthy of her family's pride.

Her true passion is for Kendo, and she's a member of the Kendo-club, as well as the heir to her family's school of swordsmanship. As a result, she tends to carry a bokken almost everywhere, but this only counts as a mild quirk, by the standards of the school.

She's also in entirely the wrong anime.

Background:

Sanada Yukihime is probably best known in her school for being, well… average. She gets good, but average grades. She's tall, but Sakamoto Kiyoko is taller, which draws attention away from her. Her hair and eyes are unusual, but still not too noticable when there's a 12-year-old wünderkind around. She's a capable kendoist, but even in the Kendo club she's ranked as number five. Lastly, she's a member of the student council, but only holds the position of secretary. All in all, she's flown fairly under the radar so far.

And she's hoping like hell she can keep it that way, because underachieving is damn hard work!

Her big secret is that she's a psyker, as are several other members of her family. As such, she's been blessed with a staggering intellect, superb control over her own body, and the ability to throw boulders with her mind. Not to mention fashion a blade of her own thoughts. She's even cute (much to her annoyance), or would be, if she didn't make sure to dress down so that she doesn't draw too much attention. All she wants is a quiet life, a respectable education, and to continue the Sanada family's tradition of quietly defending Japan from the forces of darkness. And if she can keep from getting captured by any number of governmental organizations who'd just love to figure out how psychic powers work, that would be good too.

Thankfully, there's an ancient pact that states that although any member of the Sanada family with superhuman powers can be conscripted by the government until the age of 18, the prospective conscriptee will not be targeted unless he or she's a) clearly using her powers, or b) foils all attempts at bringing them in. Yukihime only has two years to go, and doesn't forsee having much problem dodging her observers in the future.

She really is setting herself up for disappointment, isn't she?

There is a secondary secret, as well, although it isn't so much life-threatening as having a massive embarassment potential: Yukihime can't forego a single episode of Love Gladiator Nurse Isamu. She even runs a fan-site and forum dedicated to the show. Furthermore, she is still a massive fan of, well, Destruction Maiden Kiyoko, to the point that she has all three seasons on DVD and lots of merchandise. Unfortunately, she treats both these things as Dark and Terrible Secrets(TM), and wouldn't admit to it even on pain of death. Which makes the fact that Kiyoko attends her school a bit… awkward.

Complicating matters further is her current hate/hate relationship with the president of the Studen Council Naruse Shigemoro. Given his shady parents, those five bodyguards that keep following him around, and the fact that he's abusing his position and power, Yukihime's decided that she can't stay on the sidelines on this. Perhaps most heinously, he denied permission for the Kiyokotaku to form a club. Hence, the most adventurous thing she's done so far is gotten elected to the Student Council. She's sworn to unseat Naruse, come what may.

Important people:

Sanada Shinichiro (aka Ojii-sama) - Yukihime's paternal grandfather, the current grandmaster of the Sanada School of martial arts. Although not a psyker, he's helped Yukihime develop her powers in secret, as well as teaching her almost all he knows about swordsmanship. He's grooming her to take over for him when his time is out, and she loves him dearly. She'd just prefer it if he wasn't also completely in favour of that ancient pact, and considered it a wonderful opportunity for further training…

Sanada Hiroshi and Sanada Hikaru - Yukihime's parents. Decent, stable, and loving, but a bit worried about how seriously their daughter is taking the family tradition of "defending Japan from the shadows". Hiroshi interpreted it creatively to become a functionary in the Diet. Still, if Yukihime's set on it, they'll encourage her.

The Sanada Family

Ever since their most illustrious ancestor fell in battle, the Sanada family have endeavoured to keep themselves out of the limelight. Realizing that taking overt part in the events of the nation would probably lead the family as a whole to share the same fate as Yukimura, the clan instead faded from the public eye. Yukimura's prowess in battle had led to rumors and stories about the Sanada clan possessing mystical powers, or perhaps a divine blessing, and the new Shogun allowed the family to fade from view, in exchange for a promise that anyone blessed with superhuman or supernatural abilities could be conscripted by the Shogunate. After some back and forth, the head of the clan managed to get a clause added that ensured that if the conscriptee could manage to avoid detection or fight off the agents sent to retrieve them on their own, they would be free to choose their fate after their eighteenth birthday.

Whether or not Yukimura possessed any supernatural qualities or abilities are unknown. However, in the centuries following his death, five gifted children have been born into the Clan before Yukihime:

  • Nobuyuki - A samurai known for his resilience and superhuman strength.
  • Yukitora - General and master strategist, rumored to read the minds of his opponents. Possibly a reincarnation of Yukimura
  • Yukishige - [Redacted]
  • Yukiko - One of the finest martial artists of her age, legend has it that she could use anything, including another person's breath, as a weapon
  • Yukimaru - One of the samurai who betrayed the Shogunate during the Meiji Restoration.

Menaced by the Men in Mauve - Since psykers and espers are quite useful no matter what they can or can't do, there are a lot of people that are very interested in finding out how psychic powers actually work. Of course, not many psykers are interested in being lab-rats. Enter the Men in Mauve (all the other colours were taken). These sinister, yet oddly stylish, secret agents operate on behalf of the government, and, thanks to an ancient pact with the Sanada family, can consider Yukihime fair game until she's 18. Her grandfather thinks it's an excellent training excersize. Yukihime thinks it's a massive pain in the ass. So far, she's stayed clear by pretending to be normal. So far. If her powers are exposed, however, things could get… interesting.

Mistaken Reincarnated Identity - Sanada Yukimura was a great man. And while it's not unreasonable to suspect that Yukihime's a reincarnation of him, she's most emphatically not. Which only convinces all the other reincarnated heroes and villains that seem to show up with annoying regularity that Yukimura's playing a deep game indeed, this time.
